The Carbon Receipt: a product’s carbon number, and its provenance.

A Carbon Receipt travels with a product and says where its number came from — including, plainly, whether anyone independent has checked it.

What a Carbon Receipt is.

A Carbon Receipt — a Carbon Attested Product, or CAP — is the record a product carries once its carbon model has been registered in CarbonSig. It states the product, its total embodied emissions and its carbon intensity per unit, the methodology behind the figure, and the model’s verification status. It is issued from a locked, read-only model, so what it reports cannot quietly change afterwards.

Read this part carefully

A receipt reports a status. It does not confer one.

A Carbon Receipt can be issued from a registered model without any verifier having seen it — the default status is Self attested. That is not a loophole; it is what makes the status field meaningful. A registered model moves through several statuses, and three of them settle the question this page is about: whether anyone independent has checked the number.

  1. Self attested

    The default. You calculated the number and you stand behind it. No independent party has reviewed the model, and the receipt says so.

  2. Verified

    Set when verification details from outside the platform are entered against the model — by you, not by us. It records that a check happened elsewhere. It is your assertion, carried on the receipt, not an opinion produced inside CarbonSig.

  3. Verified on CarbonSig

    The only one of the three an independent, accredited verifier produces. It means a verifier reviewed the registered model in the Verifier Hub, worked through findings round by round, and issued a formal opinion.

The other statuses a model can hold — Pending verification, Under verification, Revisions requested — mean a review is under way. They record that the process has started and assert nothing about how it ends. A receipt issued while one of those is showing is not a verified receipt.

What is on it

Enough to check the number, not just read it.

  • The product and the quantity

    What the figure is for, and the unit it is expressed against.

  • Total embodied CO2e, and intensity per unit

    The absolute number and the per-unit figure a buyer or a declaration actually uses.

  • The methodology

    The standard the figure was calculated to, so the number can be compared with something.

  • The verification status — and the verifier, where there is one

    Which status the model holds, and who issued the opinion if an independent verifier did.

Receipts are live records rather than static PDFs. A PDF is a photograph of a claim; a receipt stays connected to the registered model it was issued from.

Sharing it

Private, public, or to named recipients.

A receipt can stay inside your workspace, be shown on a public page, or be released to specific recipients only. You choose per receipt.

Transferring one is different from sharing it. When a Carbon Receipt is transferred to another account it becomes an Environmental Attribute Certificate for the recipient, which they can use as an input in their own model — a supplier figure that arrives already documented instead of as an estimate. A transfer cannot be undone.

Where it comes from

Register the model, then issue the receipt.

A receipt is issued from a registered model — a locked, read-only copy of the model that acts as the authoritative record. Registering is what stops the data a verifier reviewed from differing from the data on the finished receipt.
